Automation Concept for Motion Compensated Gangway

Ampelmann is the success story of a number of students from TU Delft, who set up a successful company with an innovative idea and made a big contribution to increasing safety levels when boarding boats and working at sea.

The idea consisted of a motion compensated gangway to enable the movement of people or materials from a moving ship to a fixed platform. The basis for this is a hexapod that compensates for the movements in 6 degrees of freedom and has a gangway or crane mounted on top.

The challenge
A good idea is still far from being a successful product. Having successfully demonstrated that the concept worked, the prototype had to be developed in a system that was reliable, safe and serviceable.

Result
A redundant control concept was developed in close collaboration with Ampelmann. Because this involved a unique application, there were a lot of issues for which no suitable solutions were immediately available. Using the specific knowledge of Batenburg JB Systems, these solutions were realised within the control concept and more than 50 systems have since been installed on the basis of this design.
