Samga and Magion succesfully integrate IT and OT!
SAMGA NV, an Antwerp based company specializing in grain storage, dates back to the end of the 19th century when the port of Antwerp was the hub of the grain trade in Belgium. The 1st grain warehouse was already built in 1895. A 2nd warehouse was constructed in the 1930s and the last expansion dates back to the 1970s.
After years of intensive usage, there was an urgent need for a thorough renovation of the grain terminal. An ideal moment to update the process operations to current, contemporary norms and standards.
A few years ago, under the guidance of Rudi Verberck (SAMGA), and supported by his team: Bart De Jongh and Tony Steinfort, the vertical grain silos were thoroughly overhauled. In addition, for the storage and processing of dry bulk, a number of horizontal flat silos were built. To facilitate the (un)loading operations of these new silos, new conveyor belts and a hydraulic crane were purchased.
At that time, not only the mechanical installations were renewed, but it was absolutely mandatory to give special attention to the industrial automation of the terminal. For this, SAMGA consulted Magion because they are known as a trusted engineering office, specialized in process control & automation. The collaboration between SAMGA and Magion has been running smoothly for years, creating an excellent and trusted relationship resulting in a special project. To this end, Magion designed the SAMGA IT and OT infrastructure setup as an important part for the future automation of the silo operations.
The new design was drawn up to achieve a secure, future-proof and scalable OT infrastructure. Of course, the various site-specific components (including cameras, weighbridge, office network) that guarantee the daily operations of the terminal, were taken into account. The emphasis was put on a secure and optimal link between the SAMGA IT and OT environment.
Rudi Verberck replies: “This design, based on gap-analysis research and highly specific consultancy from Magion, has resulted in the development of an unique solution for SAMGA. Herewith SAMGA can continue its terminal operations with peace of mind and most importantly, SAMGA can look positively to a future where new investments will perfectly match the chosen solution.”
