Modernisation at Brouwerij Roman: technology in service of tradition

A centuries-old brewery with a modern touch

Brouwerij Roman in Oudenaarde is the oldest family brewery in Belgium. Beer has been brewed here since 1545, with respect for tradition and craftsmanship. But today’s production requires modern installations that ensure reliability, efficiency and continuity.

The challenge

The historic buildings and existing infrastructure made expansion and renewal complex. Roman was looking for a partner that could modernise production without affecting the heritage of the site.

The key requirements were:

• greater reliability of the installations,

• more efficient energy management,

• and a flexible foundation for future growth.

Our solution

Batenburg renewed the pipework, valves and instrumentation, and integrated modern control systems, including PLC and SCADA. The work took place in the middle of an operational brewery. This required tight planning, maximum safety and extreme precision.

Together with Roman’s brewers, the installations were tested and commissioned, with close attention to continuity of the production process.

Batenburg Nexus

In addition to the physical modernisation, Brouwerij Roman now also uses Batenburg Nexus, the platform that collects and analyses industrial data and translates it into actionable insights.

This includes:

• monitoring energy and water consumption,

• predicting maintenance moments,

• and optimising production processes.

With Nexus, Roman gains better control over both day-to-day operations and the long term. The brewery can respond more quickly to deviations, prevent failures and work in a targeted way on sustainability.

The result

Thanks to the modernisation, Brouwerij Roman now has a future-proof installation. The process is more stable, the risk of failures has been reduced and production has become more energy-efficient.

Combined with Nexus, there is now also a digital foundation for further optimisation. This allows Roman to continue its centuries-old brewing tradition with confidence.
