HMI technology for medical simulation and skills training

For various medical simulators developed by Simendo, Batenburg Applied Technologies supplies customised joystick solutions. Through design-in support and product delivery, we are involved in the development of simulation systems that enable both novice and experienced surgeons to train their surgical skills in a safe and realistic environment.

The collaboration started with a laparoscopic surgery simulator designed to train both beginner and advanced surgeons. For this application, Batenburg supplied the joysticks and supported the selection and integration of the most suitable controller solution.

Specific requirements for arthroscopy simulators

Building on more than 35 years of experience in joystick and controller technology, Batenburg once again guided Simendo in selecting and applying the right solution for this unique application.

Following the success of the initial project, Batenburg once again partnered with Simendo in the development of an arthroscopy simulator. This simulator is used to train surgeons in hand-eye coordination and instrument handling for knee and shoulder procedures. Advanced training solutions such as these allow surgeons and medical residents to safely practice their skills and objectively demonstrate the skills required in clinical practice.

To replicate the movements of surgical instruments as realistically as possible, a joystick was required without a standard handle and without a tactile center position, while providing a 40-degree deflection angle. Following extensive testing, with the Gessmann V14 joystick serving as the basis, the optimal configuration was selected and implemented.
